An AI chatbot for your Wix website in 2026: Smart Chat, apps, or your own code

If you added Wix’s AI chat a while ago, things have changed: Wix stopped offering AI Site Chat to new sites in March 2026 and replaced it with Smart Chat, which runs on AI credits. Here are your three options today, what each needs, and what to check before you choose.

The short answer

To add an AI chatbot to a Wix website, you can install Wix Smart Chat, which replaced AI Site Chat in March 2026 and answers from your site content using AI credits.
Or install a chat app from the Wix App Market, such as Chatway or other AI chatbot apps.
Or paste a chatbot’s code in Settings → Custom Code, which needs a published site with a connected domain, so in practice a Premium plan.

What happened to Wix AI Site Chat

Wix’s help centre says that from March 2026, Wix AI Site Chat can no longer be installed on new sites, and that Wix Smart Chat replaces it. AI Site Chat learned from your public site content plus “knowledge rules” you wrote. Many guides still describe the old product, so check which one a tutorial is talking about.

Option 1: Wix Smart Chat

Smart Chat combines an AI assistant that answers from your site content and the training you add in the dashboard, with manual chat for you and your team. It supports knowledge rules, restriction rules and handover to a teammate.

How the AI is paid for: AI credits. Wix says credits are used when the AI chat is online and answers visitors, and that when you run out, Smart Chat switches to offline mode (manual chat stays available).
Free allowance: a free trial of 50 conversations in total; free Wix plans get 30 AI credits a day, up to 120 a month. Premium plans include monthly credits.
Reviews: the Smart Chat listing in the Wix App Market showed 2.7 out of 5 from 153 reviews on 25 September 2026.

Best for: owners who want everything inside Wix and don’t mind the credit model.

Option 3: Any chatbot, with Custom Code

Most chatbot services give you a short script to paste into your site. On Wix that goes in Custom Code:

Check the requirements
Wix says your site must be published and have a connected domain. Connecting your own domain needs a Premium plan.
Open Custom Code
In your site’s dashboard: Settings → Custom Code (under Development & integrations), then + Add Custom Code.
Paste the chatbot’s script
Choose Body – end, apply it to All pages, and load it on each page.
Set the cookie category
Wix asks you to categorise custom code for cookie consent. A chat widget is usually “Essential” only if it is needed for a service the visitor asks for; check with the chatbot provider.
Publish and test
Open your live site on your phone and ask the chatbot a real question.

Two warnings from Wix: if you change the site’s domain, your code snippets are deleted; and Wix doesn’t support problems with third-party code. Also, Google Tag Manager can’t be added through Custom Code on Wix; it uses Wix’s own marketing integrations.

What to check, whichever you choose

It answers only from your site and your own notes, not the AI’s general knowledge.
It shows where an answer came from, or at least links to the page.
It says so when it doesn’t know, and offers a person.
Questions it can’t answer become enquiries you actually receive, with the conversation.
It keeps taking enquiries when AI credits or the AI service run out.
Prices, bookings and anything risky can be kept for a person.

Speed and privacy

Load the chat script at the end of the page, not in the head, so it doesn’t slow the first view.
Check where conversations are stored and what is sent to the AI provider. HolaReply removes names, emails and phone numbers before any question reaches the AI.
Mention the chatbot in your privacy policy, and set its cookie category honestly.
